Today, the true trekking adventure begins. After breakfast, embark on a 14 km journey toward Bhojbasa (3,658 m). The trail traces the path of the roaring Bhagirathi River, which keeps you company on your right as you steadily ascend into the thin mountain air.

While the uphill climb may leave you momentarily breathless, the scenery provides instant rejuvenation. Ahead, the sky is dominated by the awe-inspiring Neelkanth Peak, its snowy summit acting as a beacon for the miles ahead. As you reach the campsite, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the famous coniferous Bhoj (Birch) trees, from which the area gets its name. Witness a spectacular high-altitude sunset as the peaks turn to gold before settling into your camp for a well-earned rest.

Begin your day with a spectacular Himalayan sunrise before embarking on a 10 km journey that takes you to the very heart of the mountains. Today’s trek leads you to Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the physical source of the Ganges. Standing before the intimidating wall of ice, a profound sense of humbleness washes over you as you witness the raw power of nature.

The terrain becomes rugged and rocky here, requiring careful footwork as you navigate the glacier moraine. You will cross from the right bank of the glacier to the left, beginning the final, steep ascent to Tapovan (4,400 m). As you crest the ridge, the landscape opens into a stunning high-altitude meadow. This is the sacred base camp for expeditions to the iconic Mt. Shivling. Surrounded by exhilarating views of the Bhagirathi Peaks, you will settle into your tent for an unforgettable night under the stars.

After a final morning gazing at the sunlit peaks of Mt. Shivling, it’s time to begin the journey back. Today’s 14 km trek is primarily downhill, allowing you to breathe a little easier and soak in the vast Himalayan vistas from a new perspective.

Leaving the high meadows of Tapovan behind, you will retrace your steps across the glacial moraine and past Bhojbasa. Your destination is Chirbasa (3,300 m), a serene campsite named after the towering Chir (Pine) trees that flourish here. As the air grows thicker and the landscape greener, enjoy your final night under the stars, celebrating the successful completion of your high-altitude ascent with a peaceful stay in the pine-scented wilderness.

The final leg of your trekking adventure begins with a gentle 9 km descent from Chirbasa back to the sacred town of Gangotri. This shorter route allows you to savor the last few miles of the Bhagirathi’s rhythmic flow and the crisp mountain air.

As you reach the trailhead in Gangotri, you bid farewell to the high peaks and board your vehicle for a 90 km drive back to Uttarkashi. The descent by road offers a chance to reflect on the incredible journey from the snout of the glacier to the heights of Tapovan.
