Spiti doesn’t ease you in — it drops you straight into a cold desert landscape the moment you clear the Atal Tunnel, and this trip is built entirely around that shift. From Manali, the route climbs over Kunzum Pass into Kaza, using it as a base to reach the UNESCO-recognised Tabo Monastery and the cliffside Dhankar Gompa, before pushing further into Spiti’s high-altitude villages — Langza with its fossils and giant Buddha statue, Komic and Hikkim (home to the world’s highest post office), and the imposing Key Monastery. A night in Kibber, near Asia’s highest suspension bridge at Chicham, leads into the trip’s centrepiece: a night camping beside the turquoise waters of Chandratal Lake under an open sky full of stars. It’s a fast-moving, raw Himalayan loop built for travellers who want the real, off-grid version of Spiti rather than a polished one.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Manali

Arrive in the scenic hill station of Manali and check in to the hotel to relax after the journey. Spend the day at leisure exploring Mall Road, local markets, and nearby cafés, soaking in the mountain air before the adventure ahead. Overnight stay in Manali.

Day 02 :

Manali – Atal Tunnel – Kunzum Pass – Kaza

After breakfast, begin the drive into Spiti Valley through the Atal Tunnel, one of the world's longest high-altitude tunnels, watching the landscape shift from lush green valleys to stark Himalayan terrain. The route passes through Chhatru and Batal before crossing the Kunzum Pass at roughly 14,931 feet, with stops for photographs along the way, then continues through Losar to Kaza by evening. Overnight stay in Kaza.

Day 03 :

Kaza – Tabo – Dhankar – Dhankar Lake – Kaza

Drive to the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site often called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas," known for its murals and Buddhist heritage. Continue to Dhankar, the former capital of Spiti's rulers, to explore the cliffside Dhankar Monastery perched above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers, with the option of an hour's climb to the turquoise Dhankar Lake. Return to Kaza in the evening. Overnight stay in Kaza.

Day 04 :

Kaza – Langza – Komic – Hikkim – Key Monastery – Kibber – Chicham

Head out to Spiti's high-altitude villages, starting with Komic, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world, and Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office — a good spot to send a postcard home. Continue to Langza, known for its marine fossils and giant Buddha statue, then visit Key Monastery, the largest in Spiti Valley. The day ends in Kibber, known for its landscapes and wildlife, with a stop at the Chicham Bridge, one of Asia's highest suspension bridges, before checking into a homestay. Overnight stay in Kibber/Chicham.

Day 05 :

Kibber/Chicham – Losar – Kunzum Pass – Chandratal Lake

After breakfast, begin the return journey via Losar village, crossing Kunzum Pass again for more sweeping mountain views before arriving at Chandratal, also known as the Moon Lake. Spend time walking around the crystal-clear high-altitude lake as it shifts colour through the day, then move to the nearby campsite for dinner under a sky full of stars and the Milky Way. Overnight stay in Swiss camps near Chandratal Lake.

Day 06 :

Chandratal – Batal – Sissu – Atal Tunnel – Manali

After breakfast at the campsite, begin the scenic drive back to Manali, passing through Batal and the picturesque village of Sissu before crossing the Atal Tunnel one last time. The Spiti loop closes here, ending an off-grid Himalayan trip built around some of the region's most dramatic landscapes.
